Automation: why is it so important?

In the world of logistics, transport and warehousing, automation is no longer an option: it is a prerequisite for a company to operate at full capacity and with maximum efficiency.

When we talk about automation, we are referring to the replacement of manual operations and equipment with automatic installations and processes. The number of companies turning to new technologies and robotics is increasing day by day. In many warehouses, the use of AGVs or mobile robots is increasing.

Why is it necessary to implement automated transport and storage solutions? Which are its benefits?

  • Improved performance. Automation implies an improvement of the entire logistics chain, both in the reception processes and in the storage and dispatch of goods.
  • Reduction of logistics costs. Automation limits many warehouse cost overruns, such as those caused by errors in order preparation or by impacts and wear on the pavement caused by manual handling equipment.
  • Eliminate or minimize errors. By reducing human intervention, automated solutions ensure that failures are eliminated in the location, transport, and storage of stock in the warehouse.
  • Increased safety for personnel and carg Automated processes eliminate damage to the goods resulting from manual intervention. In addition, they prevent accidents involving machinery, unit loads, and operators.
  • Stock control. Thanks to warehouse management software (WMS) and other computer systems, it is possible to program, control and monitor all logistics operations that take place inside and outside the warehouse.
  • Optimization of space in the warehouse. Automated storage systems make it possible to locate and handle goods at height. In this way, storage space is gained and, consequently, operations are carried out more smoothly and costs are saved in the purchase or rental of larger warehouses.
  • Improvement of the quality of work. Greater safety and more ergonomic and specialized work. An automated warehouse is a guarantee of a reduction in accidents and occupational diseases. Employees are "freed" from repetitive work and physical overexertion, being able to dedicate themselves to more comfortable tasks where they provide a unique dimension: such as equipment programming or supervision.
